Pre-Draft Outlook
Deep vein thrombosis ended Victor Wembanyama’s All-Star season and the Spurs’ odds at making the SoFi Play-In Tournament. It hasn’t dented the astronomically high hopes for his career or San Antonio’s future. The latter received a major boost when the Spurs jumped six spots in the Draft Lottery and landed the second overall pick. Wembanyama, De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle are already in place. A top-tier talent is set to join them, and that’s before accounting for the second lottery pick (No. 14 from Atlanta) in San Antonio’s possession.
The Way To Go
With Cooper Flagg considered the unofficial consensus at No. 1, the Spurs hold the enviable first domino in the 2025 NBA Draft. Their options should slot in nicely between Wembanyama and Fox, with Rutgers guard Dylan Harper rumored as the early frontrunner. That’s not just for raw potential; Harper’s generational ability to score in the paint would mesh well with a Spurs team that ranked 19th in paint points per game. Expect San Antonio to do its due diligence, however, evaluating fellow Rutgers freshman Ace Bailey and Baylor’s V.J. Edgecombe before making the call on draft night. They’ll cast a wider net around No. 14, assuming they keep the pick, where they can choose from versatile forwards (Danny Wolf, Egor Demin), promising shooters (Jase Richardson, Carter Bryant) or something else entirely.
