Overview
Born and raised in Australia, Alex Toohey joined the NBA Academy in 2020 and played three seasons, leading his team, BA Centre of Excellence, in scoring during his final campaign. Toohey then committed to Gonzaga but chose to stay in Australia and play for the Sydney Kings for three seasons. He opted not to enter the 2024 NBA Draft, and his patience paid off. During the 2024-25 season, Toohey averaged 10.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks in 23 minutes per game while posting 45/31/73 shooting splits on 8.4 field goal attempts, 2.9 3-point tries and 2.9 free throw trips per game en route to winning the NBL Next Generation award.

Analysis
Toohey is a well-rounded player but doesn’t have any singular elite offensive trait. He’s best when attacking the paint but isn’t overly athletic at the rim for NBA standards. Toohey will also hit open 3-pointers but isn’t a sharpshooter. His size and feel for the game allow him to navigate into the paint, but he’s not a natural point guard or playmaker. Defensively is where he shined the most in Australia. Toohey is an NBA-caliber role player with solid potential, but his upside will depend on which organization he winds up with and how he’s developed.

Projection
Toohey was a jack of all trades in Australia, making his fit in the NBA interesting because most role players have one elite skill that earns them playing time. If he develops his 3-point shot, Toohey could serve as a sharpshooter like Doug McDermott (6-foot-6, 225) or Max Strus (6-5, 215). If he works on his ballhandling and playmaking, Toohey’s game would look similar to fellow Aussie Josh Giddey (6-8, 216). If he gets stronger around the rim and evolves as a scorer, Toohey could blossom into a star player like Franz Wagner (6-10, 220).
